“Confirmation of the international nature of the region”- Christian Bechon

Christian Bechon, CEO of LFB, a French biopharmaceutical group specialising in plasma-derived medicines, proteins derived from biotechnology and cell and gene treatments.

What would the establishment of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in Lille represent for you?

High-quality expertise is a key factor in maintaining or developing the confidence manufacturers have in their agency. I am confident that the links between the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) and the EMA will be strengthened if the latter is installed in our territory.

Most importantly, the agency would be located just one hour away from Paris: This guarantees considerable time savings when we meet with regulatory authorities.

What do you think are the strengths of Lille that support this bid?

With a rich historical heritage, the European Metropolis of Lille has made culture a major asset in its development and attractiveness.

Lille is located half an hour by TGV from Brussels, home of the European institutions and less than an hour from Paris. For employees of the agency who will keep a connection with London (family, friends, etc.), the Eurostar provides a quick connection between Lille and London.

Finally, property and rental are cheaper than in other European cities.

What would be the repercussions of the establishment of the EMA on your daily life and, on a larger scale, for the Hauts-de-France Region and France?

For the biopharmaceutical group LFB:

  • greater geographical proximity to regulatory authorities
  • less time spent on meetings
  • trust in the agency’s expertise

For the Hauts-de-France region:

  • job creation
  • increased consumption
  • development of partnerships with academic experts
  • confirmation of the international/European nature of the region
